Take time to recognize the need to push yourself into motion when you're feeling stuck.

We've all felt stuck. The promotion didn't come through at work. Our project somehow just stalled out. A relationship seemed to fall into a litany of the same old thing. It's a frustrating place to be. What's more, it's where most people give up.

The lack of forwarding progress doesn't have to mean failure, though. Momentum loss can be regained. All it takes is a little hard work and a lot of intentionalities. Transforming workplace wellness can give you the push to get yourself back into motion.

Each year, May is Mental Health Awareness Month allowing us the opportunity to start yearlong initiatives in the workplace. With the current evolving changes to the workplace, including social distancing and more people working from home, now is the ideal time for companies to think ahead and plan what initiatives they want to implement when employees either return to the physical workplace in a few weeks or have to continue to remain at a distance from co-workers.

You might think that it’s the major stressors such as:

·      a divorce

·      death of a loved one

·      major surgery

·      moving to a new house

or a combination of any of them that is the main factor that’s doing the most damage. However, a study led by Kate Leger from the University of California concluded that it’s the little stressors that can have a seriously detrimental effect on the body too, negatively impacting the heart in particular. The researchers found that what would be considered a minor issue such as unexpectedly being asked to work a deadline or having a minor argument with a friend could actually create a powerful negative effect, particularly if we keep a firm grip on what was causing us to be upset and continue to fret about it throughout the day.

Now, with the ever-changing landscape of the working environment, new areas such as social isolation and loneliness may also need to be addressed, as well as the anxiety that some employees experience if they are required to interact with customers in public places.

While there’s a variety of additional stressful situations that can contribute to poor mental health such as lack of job security, living in an unsafe neighborhood, belonging to the “sandwich generation” where an individual has young adults in college and aging parents to take care of or being a shift worker with working hours that negatively impact regular sleep habits, consider the impact of what is happening today.

Mental health awareness can often be woven through other wellness programs and have physical elements as well as educational components. Complementary topics to counter apprehension and pressure include the following:

·      financial wellness

·      sleep management

·      physical programs

·      nutritional counseling

·      yoga, meditation, and mindfulness

Consider what initiatives can be made to support employees throughout this year. Combined with employee ideas, a vision for the future, and the right policies and procedures companies can create mental health awareness programs and develop a pro-active culture of well-being.
